Yesterday, one of the worst hurricanes in recorded history slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast, taking aim at the east side of New Orleans and southern Mississippi. The devastation that followed is surreal. I was part of the group of US soldiers that took part in relief efforts in Homestead after Hurricane Andrew, but, from what I've seen in the news, the effects of Hurricane Katrina are much more catastrophic. My kid sister, who is attending school at Loyola University, was able to get out of harm's way.
